How To Stay Present

A recent conversation I had with my guides.

Me:  How do I become present?

Guides:  Breathe.

Me: Argh! I’m tired of that answer. You’ve been telling me that for years.

Guides:  And we will keep telling you that as many times as you ask the question.

Me:  So, I guess I need to ask how to stay present?

Guides:  Ah, that is the question we’ve been waiting for. Our question back to you is why don’t you stay present.

Me:  Because I have to get stuff done! If I’m not thinking about the next thing that needs to get done, I’ll forget to do it, and then I won’t get things done and then, and then. . .

Guides:  What happens if you don’t get things done?

Me:  Then I am a failure. Wow, I did not know that was in there.

Guides:  See, a little dialog gets you where you need to be. You realize now that fear of failure keeps you from staying in your body and the present moment.

Is it true that you are a failure if you don’t get things done?

Me:  No. It isn’t. But it feels scary. I feel a tightness in my chest when I even think about it. I define so much of my worth by how much I can accomplish in a day. So it bothers me when I have to slow down. I feel as if I am going to fail myself. I know that no one else has these expectations of me. This is something I put onto myself.

How can I shift this?

Guide:  Trust. Trust that you will get what you need to get done. We know this feels scary but try it as an experiment. Take this moment, breathe and follow the Flow of Life. The Flow of Life has no other desire of you than to experience joy. If you follow the Flow of Life, everything gets done precisely when needed. No efforting required.

Me:  That feels peaceful when I think of it this way. O.K. I’m going to give it a go. This feels huge.

My worth is not determined by how much I get done! My worth is not determined by how much I get done. I am safe. I am safe. I am safe.

I guess I didn’t realize there was a safety element in this. That may be a dialog for another day.

Using Tracking to Create A Healthy Habit

Tracking is a process where you use a system to motivate yourself to create a healthy habit. For example, I use foil stars on a calendar to encourage getting my steps in for the day. The more stars I accumulate, the more motivated I am to exercise.

Before I had the cooties, I was committed to 10,000 steps a day. I perceived anything under 10,000 steps as a failure. Once I began to recover, I realized that I needed to change the rigidity around my practice. I was no longer willing to beat myself up over what I hadn’t done. Instead, I decided to reward myself for my accomplishments.

As my health came back online, I realized that 10,000 steps a day was no longer a realistic goal for me. So instead, I created a tier system.

Della’s Step Reward System

Silver Star = 7,000

Gold Star = 8,000+

Super Star (Gold Star with a black dot) = 10,000+

Unicorn = 11,000+

If I don’t get at least 7,000 steps, there is no star on the calendar. But, as a competitive person by nature, I don’t want to see a gap on the calendar. So the holes there are because my body needed a rest day.

One night, I had slept only a few hours. I taught a yoga class the following day and had a chiropractor adjustment right after. I knew that I was unlikely to get my steps in due to a lack of sleep the night before. I napped when I got home and found myself towards the end of the day with 5,000 steps already accumulated. Knowing that I do not like gaps on my calendar, I felt motivated to get 2,000 more steps, then I did 1,000 more, and as I like being a superstar, I got 10,000 steps in by the end of the day. As I had honored my body’s need for rest, I could then honor my competitive nature by winning the day.

Here is the tracking device I use.

Tracking is not a new process for me, but I forgot what an effective tool it can be to keep me motivated. Listening to Stephen Guise, the author of Elastic Habits on The One You Feed podcast, brought this tool to my awareness. It inspired me so much that I bought his book!

What tools do you use to motivate you to practice healthy habits?

Note:  As I live in the boonies of Northern Minnesota, and it is frickin cold during the winter, I use this rebounder to get the majority of my steps on most days.

Online Pet Readings

I have recently begun offering online pet readings. I had no idea how much fun I would be having tuning into our animal friends!

What I have found during these sessions has been fascinating and even a bit “out there.” Sometimes I will tap into an animal’s past life. A pet’s past life can often inform the animal’s current behaviors. For instance, one client’s dog went to the bathroom inside the house even though she had been potty trained. In another life, this dog had been Egyptian royalty. She was used to being waited on and had servants who would follow her around cleaning up her poo. She did not understand why her current owner was upset by her behavior. I suggested that the client connect with the dog’s soul and explain to her how things are different than her Egyptian life. Also, the pet parent is not her servant and she needed to do her part for the relationship by going to the bathroom outside. I also coached the dog along the same lines while in sacred space with the animal. The client resonated completely with this information. I look forward to seeing how this story unfolds.

To begin the process, I ask the client to send me a picture of their pet along with any particular questions they may want more insight into. I then invite the animal’s energy and higher self into my field, which gives me a sense of its overall personality. If the client has specific questions about their pet, I can ask the animal’s soul at that time.

During sessions, I have accessed animals’ past lives, what the animal may need from their owners, and for one client, I even talked to beings from the star Sirius who told me that one of the reasons that system is called The Dog Star is due to their unique connection to dogs. These beings told the client they would guide her on her greater mission to help more animals.

If you would like to have a reading on your animal friend, I am offering these on a donation basis. Here is the link to donate. Once that is complete, you can email me here with a picture of your pet and any questions you may have regarding your animal. I will then email your reading to you as soon as it is completed. This is usually done within 24 hours but understand it can take longer.

Toxic Positivity

I recently heard the phrase toxic positivity. The speaker gave an example of how he tried to help his friend with depression by sharing everything he did to lift himself out of the doldrums. But, unfortunately, his friend wasn’t just down. He was clinically depressed and eventually committed suicide.

After the fact, this person realized that his friend needed professional help rather than a “pull your bootstraps up” pep talk. Hearing this got me asking myself whether I have ever used toxic positivity in my guise of “helping” others.

UW Medicine describes toxic positivity as “dismissing negative emotions and responding to distress with false reassurances rather than empathy. It comes from feeling uncomfortable with negative emotions. It is often well-intentioned but can cause alienation and a feeling of disconnection.”

In reflecting on this topic further, I could see where I have used toxic positivity in my need to fix what I perceived as a problem for someone who may have only needed me to hold them in sacred space for a few moments while they shared their feelings.

I am still learning that having a negative emotion is not bad. We are socialized to want to get rid of any uncomfortable feeling. I have been practicing sitting with my uncomfortable emotions and breathing deeply into where I feel the distress in my body. I find that instead of bypassing a difficult feeling, which inevitably comes back around, often more intensely, the challenging feeling will often dissolve with long deep breathing.

Exercise:

Recall a difficult feeling or emotion. Maybe for this experiment, make it not too intense. Notice where you feel the emotion in your body. Imagine holding this part of the body where you feel the emotion in tenderness. Begin to direct your breath into that area. Notice what happens. I find that when practicing this technique, the challenging emotion often dissolves. Does the uncomfortable feeling come back? I found that it can but not as intensely as before.

Once we become comfortable with our own difficult emotions, it will be easier to be there for others.

Flexibility: My Word Of The Year

I start so many of my posts with the phrase I was listening to a podcast. I’ll be honest and tell you I listen to many podcasts. I learn so much from others’ experiences. But, this one sentence that I recently heard deeply got my attention.

Flexibility is strength.

As a yoga teacher, you would think that flexibility comes easily, and it does in some areas of my life. Yet, in others, I can be very rigid and controlling. When I heard this sentence, I immediately saw a very stiff rod with no give to it. It was cold and immoveable. I thought how that is often representative of my thinking.

When I had the cooties, I had to surrender to the illness in my body. For two weeks, I would sleep 12 to 14 hours a night and would often nap during the day. I could barely move my body during this time. I went from 10,000 steps a day to less than 1,000.

I was surprised that my body wasn’t stiff and sore due to lack of movement. Instead, I felt loose and fluid. This absence of tension in my body puzzled me until I heard the phrase flexibility is strength. That got me reflecting on why. During my healing journey, I wasn’t thinking. I was being. I was entirely in the present moment. The only “doing” I could do was being still. There was no worrying about the past or the future. There were no expectations of what I had to get done. I completely surrendered to the experience of my body.

Now that I am recovering my health, I have begun to notice tightness in my body again. I have been thinking more, planning more, doing more. . . controlling more.

This awareness has helped me decide that 2022 is my year of allowing more flexibility into my life. The more I can let go of control and allow Life to flow through me; the more flexible I will be in my body. I’ll tell you how it all unfolds.

Return of The light

Return of the Light by David Copson

In mid-December, I came down with The Cooties. I tested positive for it a few days later. The first few days were easy peasy. I thought if this is it “I got this!” Then it turned into a sinus infection, which then turned into pneumonia. I ended up in the ER because I was having difficulty breathing.

During the first two weeks of this illness, I couldn’t touch the Light. I couldn’t hear my Internal Guidance System. I couldn’t “see” the Light at all.

I was shrouded in darkness.

I’d never had that experience before. Being shut off from the very essence of my being. I’ve always taken my connection to the Light for granted. I just assumed it would always be there.

When I told my husband about my experience he said that must have been very lonely. I started to tear up as he said that because he understood what I was saying. The Light has always been my companion. To have no access to that which makes me whole was devastating. One day, as I began to heal, the Light returned and I could see again.

I do realize that the Light never left but that is how it felt. I had many people sending me prayers and healing energy and even though I couldn’t “feel” it. I knew it. When I originally posted my experience to Facebook I was astounded at how many people had similar experiences. You can check out my original post here. I would love to hear if this has been your experience too.

Power Over Pain

Have you ever noticed how, when you are in pain, your thinking tends toward the negative? This is because pain lowers your vibration or your energetic frequency. This can be any kind of pain. For example, it can be physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual pain. Negative thinking is a natural result of dwelling in a lower vibration.

How do we shift pain? We rise above it. Easier said than done, right?
Rising above pain does not mean we ignore or deny it. Raising our vibration means we can overpower pain. Let us look at the word overpower. It is made up of two words over and power. Declare your power over pain! Choose a peaceful or joyful thought and think that. This raises your frequency back up to a place of empowerment.

When we are in fear or pain, we can feel like our mind is in control. Another way to shift out of a negative thinking pattern is by moving your body into Child’s pose. Bring your forehead to the floor with your butt moving towards your heels. Your knees can either be open are closed depending on your comfort. If you want to take this pose a step farther, you can bring your hands into Prayer pose and lengthen them towards the top of your mat. This is called Guru Pranam. This posture quickly deepens your breathing and quiets the mind. It raises your heart above your head so the mind can still. Stay here for as long as you like.

I do this pose in bed before I fall asleep to clear the gunk of the day out of my mind. When I am anxious, I do this pose, and when I feel grief, I do this pose. Thus, Guru Pranam brings balance back into the body, mind, and spirit.

How to Choose Love

I was listening to this podcast from Tara Brach on fear. She said that love is bigger than fear. This prompted the following conversation with my guides.

Me:  How does my Love become bigger than my fear?

Guides:  You start by relaxing the body. Take some deep breaths in and let the breath sink deeply into the body. Imagine that each inhalation is filling you up with light. Imagine each exhaling breath releasing all of the fear that has accumulated in your physical structure. As you focus on the breath, the mind will follow. Once the mind follows the breath, the body can sink more deeply into relaxation—this relaxation response is the container for Love.

Love needs a container. You may say that that is not true but think about it from the perspective of your physical body. The physical body is a container. You place into it anything from the foods you eat to the ideas you think. The body contains all of what you put into it. If the container becomes too full from food or drink, you don’t feel well. With time, if you continue to overfill your container, your body can break down and become diseased.

If your mind becomes too filled with fear, violent images, overthinking, etc., it too begins to wear down. Anxiety, depression, and other “mental illnesses” can occur as a result.

Fear is not natural; it is a construct of the mind. But, on the other hand, Love is natural and eternal. So, to answer your question on having your Love be bigger than your fear, breathe.

Me:  That seems too simplistic.

Guides:  It is very simple. The mind wants to distract you from breathing. When you breathe deeply, you automatically move out of the mind into Presence. It is in this space of Presence that you experience Love.

Me: It sounds like the mind is the enemy.

Guides:  Not at all. The mind is simply a tool that is needed to bring you into duality. For that is the reason you have arrived here. You wanted to learn difference. You wanted to experience opposites. You wanted to evolve and grow. You wanted to experience Love through physicality. There is nothing like your earth plane in all of the Universe. Those souls who have arrived here at this time know (on some level) the honor they are being given to experience Life. On. Earth.

What a party!
